STUDENT MOBILE PROVIDER GOES BUST

Dot Mobile, the student mobile network, was last month placed into administration, only two and half years after launching into the student market. The latest company financial report, from 2006, showed a massive loss of £5,759,000, up from £480,000 the year before.

Although no official announcement was sent to their current clients, a simple note on the front page of their website informed users that they were no longer providing full services. Current clients have been told that their contracts will continue, unaffected by the announcement, due to a special agreement with Vodafone, the ultimate network provider.

Dot Mobile, owned by JVTV Holdings Limited, the parent company of SUBtv, launched across 90 pre-selected Universities in 2005 offering bundles of ‘units’ instead of the traditional minutes or texts. Its marketing approach relied heavily on SUBtv adverts and referrals, offering up to £80 for each successful connection.

Although LX News tried to get a statement from both Dot Mobile and Vodafone, neither had replied by the time of going to press.

  1. They’ve put me through absolute hell with their units.. I really hope I can cancel my contract, somehow.. =(

  2. Dot provided the worst service I encountered in my life - so it’s good to see that there is justice in the world, and that a company aiming to survive on promises and ripping people off will eventually go bust.

  3. I had a sim card from dot mobile. It cost £20 for a month and i could cancel at any time. It was very good value as it used the same principal as the Tmobile billing systems, instead of set texts and minutes.

I go a good deal from vodafoen eventually.

I told them i was leaving as i had ordered a £15 Solo Tmobile sim card , £15 a month for 350 minutes, 650 texts and this worried them!

They rang later that day offering me everything under the sun.

I eventually settled with them and managed to get 600 Minutes and unlimited texts as well as only paying £15 a month.

If you were with dot mobile i would advise of this strategy , or even if you have some time left on your contract to get a cheaper deal so they get your business!
