NUS IN TATTERS AS GOVERNANCE PROPOSALS ARE REJECTED

In the last few minutes, NUS’s controversial governance proposals aimed at overhauling the way our national union is run have been rejected by delegates at the annual conference, Blackpool. Although the proposals received a majority support, it missed out on reaching the 2/3rds majority required for the proposals to be ratified, by 25 votes.

The result was so close that a recount was demanded. However, in yet more controversy, the doors to conference floor, which are locked during a vote, were re-opened before authorisation by the independent chair, meaning a recount could not be conducted.

LX News sources have informed us that many students unions are outraged at the result, some even threatening to walk out in protest.

The result is a huge kick in the teeth for National President Gemma Tumelty who has staked her Presidential ‘legacy’ on the proposals being passed.

LX News will continue its coverage of the conference throughout the week.

Vote Result:

• 1075 Voted (with 717 needed for 2/3rd majority)

• 692 favour
• 383 against

  1. the chair did actually state that the doors be opened.

    at the extraordinary conference when delegates voted on the governance review, the chair stated that she saw a clear majority, calls for a count were ignored and the review was passed;
    at this conference, the chair said exactly the same thing, this time however calls for a count were granted and the motion fell!

    if calls for a count were granted at extraordinary conference as they should have been for such an important vote (just one example of the NEC’s lack of respect for democracy), we probably wouldnt have even been debated the review at this conference.

    That is not correct. As soon as the chair announced the results she immediately followed by calling an access break. Meaning that the doors be unlocked.

    The chair did not allow time for a recount to be requested however the initial vote was counted twice by two seperate individuals essentially giving a total of four verified counts.
