LONGEVITY OF LIVERPOOL’S LACROSSE LEGENDS

Liverpool University men’s lacrosse team ended the competitive season with the sort of champagne display even M&S can’t bottle, and in doing so claimed the Christie Cup for the first time in the club’s three year existence. The UoL side trounced Manchester and Leeds by scores of 8-2 and 9-2 respectively as top-scorer Tom Dexter netted hat-tricks in both fixtures.

In their first game against Manchester, Liverpool looked impressively disciplined. Peter McNerney the thundering organising voice at the back. Up front the team juxtaposed patience in their slow plays with the lightning pace of players such as Sambo Johnson, who took full advantage of the space afforded by his quick feet to score early on. Peter Clarke polished off the performance with a spectacular individual effort right at the death. Having stripped Manchester’s face-man of the ball from a restart, Clarke proceeded to strip three other players of their dignity with some sublime dodging before rattling the ball in off the underside of the bar.

Liverpool’s attack continued to make a mockery of their opposing defencemen in their second match against Leeds as skipper Dan Brown dispatched a ‘hoon’ of a shot from outside the fan that screamed goal all the way from his stick to the top corner. Difficult to keep quiet on and off the pitch, Andrew Farrington made a claim for the match ball with three clinical finishes and good one-on-one checking from Jason Jones ensured the Merseysiders were no fools in defence. However, the star at the back was fresher Matt Conway who was praised by his Captain for an exemplary performance. Having only picked up a long pole for the first time at training the night before, Conway looked completely unphased in his new position. Conslusion: viva lacrosse!
