Lacrosse is a sport foreign to many, so I took a moment to chat to fellow net-wielding idiot and men’s Captain Dan Brown.
What are the key elements of lacrosse?
Well, the equipment is very unusual to start with; your key item resembles a net on a stick and you have various pads and a helmet. In terms of playing it’s a physical game but you need to be agile and quick, not just strong.
How did you get into it?
Freshers’ Fair; my friend wanted to try it so I put my name down. Went to the first training and it seemed more interesting than cricket. And had more girls.
Season’s highs & lows?
Winning the Christie Cup was awesome (see opposing article). In general, as a Captain, it’s been wonderful to see the individuals in the team progress.
What’s the Freshman interest like?
We get a lot of freshman interest, as university is the first time they’ve had access to the sport. The team’s always had a good cohort of enthusiastic players as well, which helps keep people interested.
Hopes for the future?
Well we’ve realised one aim: next season the men’s team will be integrated into the BUSA league, guaranteeing more fixtures and organised transport for the team. In the long term, the committee hopes the squad can build sufficiently to support a 2nd team and also enter the NEML Saturday league. We want people to be playing as much as possible.
