Spring/Summer 2008 feels rebellious. Whereas there are often a few determining key trends each summer, this year is a battle: we can play dirty and anything goes. Slightly lamenting the simpler days of the boho revival in 2005, and the usual onset of florals and broderie anglais, with so much choice this season it’s hard to know which side to fight for. Taking a look at some inspiring catwalk pieces, it’s easy to see that all the designers are mixing it up.

Feminine florals are back with a difference. Think pretty but bold, romantic but strong. Muted pink and blood orange prints in tiered silk and ruffled organza, like those seen at Ralph Lauren and Valentino exhibit playful demure whilst teamed with edgy grunge accessories to add rock spirit. Prada has brought back uber-feminine 50’s circle skirts with whimsical prints and has antagonised with punk influences.

The classic Chanel blazer has fizzled through to other labels such as Marc Jacobs and onto the high street in Topshop. Add a corsage SJP style. Other soft tailoring can be found at Balenciaga in 30’s floral printed silk and foam jacket and short suits by Nicholas Ghesquire. If you are brave enough, follow the lead from Marc Jacobs for Louis Vuitton and go sheer: from Lanvin to Chloe it’s all about transparency. Layer with florals or strong block colours. If that’s not enough for you, come over all theatrical with star prints like those featured on Chanel jumpsuits and Yves Saint Laurent plexiglass necklaces or harlequin print organza tops at Miu Miu.

The high street has its own interpretations of all these trends and if you are feeling inspired by the freedom and liberating tensions of this season, the sky’s the limit. With so much gorgeous anarchy, be ready to break all the rules.
