UNION FACES BANKRUPTCY AFTER HUGE LOSSES
Leeds Met Union is in extreme financial difficulty, following a loss of £672,000 over the past eight years, and predicted losses of £82,000 over the next year if the current state of affairs continues. The Union could be closed as soon as Easter, meaning that bands such as Reel Big Fish face cancellation and shopkeepers and bar staff may be made redundant. Crisis meetings have been held to formulate a major restructure programme reducing the number of services currently offered. The SU president, Jodie Tumelty, sister of NUS President Gemma Tumelty is adamant that student support services remain: “The restructure proposal will give the Union financial stability going forward and allow us to focus on running services that support our students’ educational experience”. She is hopeful the union will stay open, and urges staff and students to become involved in consultations.
