Support is gathering across the world for Afghan student journalist Pervez Kambakhsh who was sentenced to death last month for downloading an article on women’s rights. Many are turning to the power of the internet to help Pervez; several Facebook groups have been created, one with over 1,300 members, whilst The Independent’s online e-petition demanding the sentence is revoked has clocked up a staggering 86,000 supporters. The campaigning does not stop online; Foreign Secretary David Miliband and US Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice were told “justice will be done” when they met the Afghan president recently. Meanwhile, Pervez’s family who are fighting for his release tell how he is being subject to physical abuse in the prison where he is currently being held and that they’ve heard unofficially that he may shortly be moved to another in the Afghan capital, Kabul.
