AND THE WINNER IS…

IN KEEPING WITH THE SEASON, THE LX FASHION AWARDS

From buying the latest trends on a shoe string budget to selecting an outfit that can withstand numerous pints and mixers with coke spilt over it, fashion in uni can be tricky. With the award season in full swing we pick out some of the leaders in 2008 student fashion.

The Alexa Chung Award: Popworld, Whitechapel

Named after predicted style icon of 2008, Miss Alexa Chung, the award goes to stores who have strived to bring us items that no other soul can claim to have, therefore providing us with the much sought after status of being ‘original’. Although faced with stiff competition from the vintage shops peppered on Bold Street, Popworld just edges it.

The heels that have to endure extreme temperature changes (minus temperatures outside to thermometer bursting heat inside), the sticky floors of the Razz and many a dodgy dance move award: Faith, Church Street

Shoes have to withstand a lot in uni, whether it’s the trek down Hardman Street or the lethal climb up and down the stairs of Krazyhouse during Carnage. A girl needs a pair of shoes that can handle it all. Use your 10% student discount for heels that are sure to arrive back home in a better state than you are!

The ‘life is more fun in fancy dress’ award: Smiffy’s, Bold Street

Although Primark is best for crazy-coloured tights or leg warmers, this award has to go to Smiffy’s. Even if you don’t purchase a whole outfit, the inspiration gained from a visit will leave you bounding to the nearest art shop to put together your own fancy dress creation.

The ‘always remember facebook is watching’ award: H&M, Church Street

It’s officially now impossible to repeatedly wear the same outfit without facebook catching you out. This award goes to the store that will fill your wardrobe with essential items and the latest trends without denting your bank balance.

The ‘I just threw it in my basket because it was only £2 but now it’s my best buy’ Award: Primark, Church Street

You’ve just painstakingly put an outfit together, the volume of clothes flung across your room conveys the effort that has been put in, only to step out of your bedroom/into your halls corridor to find….cue horror music…your mate is wearing near enough exactly the same thing. Crap. But wait, delve into that abandoned Primark bag and rummage until you place your hand on that £2 scarf/belt. At first you viewed it useless, convincing yourself that it was an impulse buy after being taken in by the lure of a single digit price tag but now it has the power to transform your outfit. You sigh with relief. Thanks Primark.
