Capital of Culture is wondrous. It’s a waste of time. Which of these two statements do you agree with? People seem to think that any opinion on the subject must lie at one of these extremes, as if it’s a renaissance or repugnance. What I am most fond of is the way that flocks of cranes are ensuring that great heaps of stuff continue to spring up across the city. Even when glimpsing builders building buildings on building sites, I still find myself thinking ‘Crikey where did they come from?’ Whether it’s a fantastic new arena or some other big, shiny construction that’s visible from the surface of the sun, Liverpool is changing. Of course a lot of plans have been abandoned but things have been cancelled before; just think of Lutyens’ cathedral, London’s Millennium Tower or the Hanging Gardens of Bootle. What counts is that a fresh layer of shimmer is being added to our already unique skyline and no amount of cynicism will change that now.
