NEW HOPES FOR LIVERPOOL UNI’S SQUAD
As is widely known, the University of Liverpool has a very gregarious rugby union team, both on and off the pitch. Even if nocturnal details are closely-guarded, this current side is proof that a team can be built on the tried-and-tested foundations of determination, talent and… a high alcohol tolerance level.
But whilst rugby players may be known for having a very active social life, current 1st team captain Sam Conning believes that the squad will soon be reaping the fortunes of a new work ethic and a newly installed coach.
“The season definitely started off badly,” Conning admits. “We suffered three consecutive defeats with the worst coming against Manchester.”
Losing to a rival is never welcome with Sam labelling it “the lowest point of the season”. As if to add more woe, the scoreline was gut-wrenching. UoL lost by 60 clear points.
Nonetheless, with the help of a few tough training sessions, things looked to be improving; two victories seemed like the catalyst to spur the team on. Alas it was not to be. Defeats to Leeds, Sheffield Hallam and Manchester (again) followed.
Conning is, however, defiant. “This is a season of change. A lot of lads went last year and performances have improved.”
Positive change is now in motion. “Four freshers have made it into the squad for the game against Leeds. Also we now have a coach, thanks to the Sport Liverpool scheme.”
And so, if things continue, it looks as if UoL may soon have yet another table-topping team.

As a fresher this is quite reassuring considering the reputation the University teams (Firsts to thirds) has of being highly cliquey and hard to join.
Maybe thats the reason the squad isn’t flourishing?
