MANCHESTER TO GAIN CUSTODY OF LIVERPOOL’S LITTLE LAMB

What’s big, yellow, about a decade old and makes no sense? Laa-Laa from the Teletubbies? Well yes but I actually meant the Superlambanana which has been the subject of debate recently after it emerged that it could be lassoed and dragged off to Manchester before the year is through.
A campaign to keep the sculpture is in the works but even if this blatant case of sheep rustling occurs it’ll be some small comfort to know that a flock of 5ft versions of the critters is lined up to parade through the streets of Merseyside later in 2008 as part of an outdoors arts event.
Although not as historically significant as the Liver Birds or culturally impressive as the Chinatown Gate the eight ton Superlambanana, designed by Japanese artist Taro Chiezo, has still found its place amongst the iconography of the city, providing another bright chunk of visual interest to the rich spectrum of oddities that pepper the streets of Liverpool.
