It has been in the pipeline for months and organised in secrecy, with rumours of who is going to turn up emerging every day. However, LX News can today announce that on the 6th of March, Africa Express is coming to the Liverpool Olympia.
Although no official announcement has been made, we have managed to obtain the names of just some of the bands who will take to the stage. They include: Reverend And The Makers, Hard Fi, Get Cape Wear Cape Fly, Scratch, Damon Albarn, The Aliens, Rachid Taha, Baaba Maal, Vieux Farka Toure, Amadou and Mariam, Wasis Diop, Souad Massi, Bassekou Kouyate with more being added each day.
There are rumours of 2 further big acts, one of which we are led to believe will be Franz Ferdinand.
Africa Express was founded by a group of musicians following the Live8 concerts in 2005, in reaction to the perceived lack of African artists on the global stage. They prefer small, unannounced events, but got their big breakthrough with their ‘word-of-mouth’ performance at the Park Stage at last years’ Glastonbury. Featuring the likes of Damon Albarn, The Magic Numbers and Fatboy Slim alongside some of Africa’s most feted musicians, it was one of the best performances Glastonbury has ever seen.
For your chance to go to this once-in-a-lifetime gig, go to www.africaexpress.co.uk.Tickets are still available, priced at £10.
