This week will see the two biggest events in the Capital of Culture year take place. It all kicks off on Friday night with the ‘People’s Opening’ at St. Georges Plateau. Put on especially for all those many thousands of people who didn’t get tickets for the main event on Saturday, it will feature massed community choirs and aerialists, performers ranging from Ringo Starr to The Wombats and an epic aerial ballet of dancing cranes, containers and scissor lifts.
But the big one takes place on Saturday. ‘Liverpool the Musical’, as it is titled, is aimed at celebrating the ‘past and the future of the city’. Featuring people and organisations like Vasily Petrenko, the Royal Liverpool Philharmonic Orchestra, No Fakin DJs and Ringo Starr, not to mention others, it is certain to be a pretty good night for all involved.
But not for students. Tickets for the Musical sold out in 17 minutes and unless you already knew what the Capital of Culture was about and that this event would be marking its start, there was no way you would have ever got tickets for it.
LX News applied, just like any other media agency, to have the opportunity to cover both of these spectacular events, only to be turned down both times.
Our Managing Director, Francisco Esteves, personally oversaw the application process, as he considered these two events key in getting students excited to be part of the Capital of Culture celebrations. “Students make up 15% of the total population of Liverpool and many of them didn’t know about these two events or if they did, they weren’t able to get tickets. I don’t think this was fair and believed it would be extremely important for our journalists to be present, if only to encourage and inspire our readers to attend future events throughout the year”.
“It was obviously hugely disappointing to be turned down, especially as the two journalists involved and the photographers were given different answers as to why they their applications had been rejected. One was told that ACC Arena was full and the others that they had applied too late. In both cases, this was obviously not true as our applications were sent within the first 2 hours of the announcements to the media. It is a shame that media agencies outside Liverpool are given priority over us, but let’s hope this doesn’t become a trend”.
For all of you who, like us, didn’t manage to get in to the Musical event on Saturday, we encourage you to go along to the People’s Opening event, this Friday at St. Georges Plateau from 20:08.
