20th ANNIVERSARY MARKED AROUND THE GLOBE
Events have been held worldwide to mark the 20th World AIDS day, a united global effort dedicated to preventing the spread of HIV and improving the lives of those living with the virus. AIDS is a growing problem in the UK; over 80,000 people are estimated to carry the infection. Sahir House, the central support centre in Merseyside for sufferers of the disease, coordinated the World AIDS day events, offering a chance to raise awareness and also pay tribute to those lost to the disease. There were plenty of ways to get involved, from buying a signature red ribbon to attending a poetry reading or charity fundraiser. Information sessions were offered for students and a conference on the dangers of HIV was held for young people. A candle-lit vigil was held at Liverpool University in a show of committed support.
