EUROPE’S MOST PRESTIGIOUS CONTEMPORARY ART AWARD COMES TO TOWN

The Turner Prize never fails to provoke debate. Usually held at Tate Britain in London, this year to celebrate the European Capital of Culture 2008, the exhibition is being shown at Tate Liverpool. The four artists short-listed for the prize are Mike Nelson, Mark Wallinger, Nathan Coley and Zarina Bhimj. First to view is Nelson’s immense installation of mind trickery using entrances, exits and doorways; a confusing juxtaposition of the internal and the external. Next up is Wallinger’s contemporary political take on art using various mediums: videos, paintings and installations, and a rather strange bear costume. Coley’s challenging pieces place particular focus upon revealing the belief systems that are embedded in society: the centre piece of which features a gigantic neon type scaffold, plainly informing the viewer that “There will be no Miracles here”. Zarina Bhimj’s hauntingly sharp images, expressing the universal human emotions grief, pleasure, love and betrayal, are captured using non-narrative photography and film in landscape and architecture. Bhimj’s memorable feature film Waiting, made in a factory used to process sisal (which is a hair-like substance used in the making of rope) is caught somewhere between slow moving film and photography, accompanied by an eerie score, the fibres flutter and linger in the breeze, voices are heard, people are seen and not seen, an oddly uncomfortable experience.
