MERRY-MAKING ON A BUDGET
Katie Brown and Victoria Bates
No matter how hard you try, there’s just no getting away from those Christmas inspired carry-ons, with one (well, two really) main requirements: alcohol and fancy dress. Although these seem like fantastic ideas at first, when you check your bank balance, reality steps in. Well, worry not because your fairy godmother is here and you shall all go to the ball…Here are some low budget, high style ideas to help you on your merry way.
Hoping for a bit of luck under the mistletoe? Then Asda have the answer, why not go as Mr or Miss Kissmas? For just £10 the boys can bag themselves a Santa suit and the girls a red velvet minidress, fur trimmed of course, complete with Santa hat. For that yuletide glamour, girls’ just need to add some white stockings or, in fear of drunken stumbles, maybe tights and a pair of glitzy high heels.
Unless you’re a whizz on the sewing machine, other alternatives can be more difficult to make. There are however, some great bargains for ready-made costumes online. But, make sure you shop around as postage and packaging rates can be pretty pricey. Most importantly, you must give plenty of time them to arrive, unless you’re feeling flush or are desperate, in which case there is always next day delivery. Try Jokers Masquerade at www.joke.co.uk for a great range including:
• Boys Christmas elf outfit – this has pants instead of tights, you’ll be glad to hear – for just £13.99
• For girls who want to be Santa’s little helper, there is a special budget elf costume for £5.99
• Those of you who like to stand out from the crowd, the Christmas tree costume priced at £10.99 is perfect
Or have you really spent way too much money on Quadvods this semester? Don’t fret! DIY fancy dress is the way forward this Christmas. Have a laugh putting ridiculous outfits together without the worry that come the end of the night you’ll return with someone’s shoddy Santa hat and snapped reindeer antlers instead of your £12.50 angel wings!
Here’s a few ideas to get the ball rolling …..
Christmas Tree
Buy a cheap green T-shirt from Primark and either green or brown leggings.
Stick on desired amounts of tinsel and battery operated fairy lights that are available from Asda for around 2 pound and then add maybe flashing necklaces and festive earrings and accessories. If you’re feeling really adventurous why not add some baubles!?
Shepherd!
Now this one’s a bit ridiculous but for the guys that really cant be bothered why not fold a sheet in half , cut out a hole for your head, and wear with a dressing gown belt. Then add a tea towel on your head and take out a toy sheep!
Have fun guys!
