CRACKDOWN ON GUN CRIME CONTINUES

RAIDS IN MERSEYSIDE LEAD TO 57 ARRESTS

The recent upsurge in the amount of gun crime across the country, and in gun related deaths among the young, has led to questions being asked about why firearms are such a problem and what can be done about it. According to the Home Office, there were 58 firearms-related homicides in 2006-07 compared with 49 in the previous year - an increase of 18%. David Cameron, Tory leader, has blamed a “broken society” for the problems.

However police across the country are taking measures to cut down on these types of crime, helping to reassure the public at a time when security and safety on the streets is such a hot topic. In Merseyside alone 57 people have been arrested in the last few weeks on suspicion of crimes relating to firearms; other associated offences are drug related.

On the 27th November three people were arrested after a raid at Circular Road West in Norris Green. A handgun, two rifles and ammunition were found; the people arrested were a 39 year old woman, a 39 year old man and a 16 year old boy. On the same day a house in Croxteth was raided and a 55 year old man was held in custody.

The police have also discovered three cannabis farms, seized seven cars and arrested twelve people after operations in Childwall and Netherley. The police also uncovered what they suspect to be class A drugs and £4000 in cash.

Ten firearms have been recovered, and the police are taking measures to reassure the public. They have visited schools in Knowsley to talk to the children about the dangers of firearms, moreover extra officers have been stationed in North Liverpool and Knowsley where the police believe the problems are worse than in other areas. This crackdown is expected to continue over the next few weeks
