What level of importance can be attributed to sport in modern society? This is an intriguing question, and one which a new study by Setanta Sports News has given an entirely new outlook to.

According to a recent survey 17% of all UK males and 10% of all UK females think about sport while having sex. Although astonishing, these figures are not the most amazing ones in the report. 20% of males have missed a friend’s wedding for a sporting event and an incredible 4% had even missed the birth of their own child to watch their team play.

These statistics truly do make astounding reading, yet the question that should be posed is whether or not this is really as unbelievable as first reading would suggest. This reporter would argue not. Both the act of love making and the excitement of a sporting event carry similar characteristics; both are pleasurable to the participants, both hold high places in modern society and, probably most importantly, both reach climaxes hard to encounter in most areas of life.

Indeed it may be plausible to question why it has taken until the year of 2007 for a company to conduct such a study. Sex and sport have been associated for many years now; one of the most memorable scenes in 1996 cult film Trainspotting intertwines the two subject matters of sex and sport. Renton (Ewan McGregor’s character) says, just after climaxing with Diane, ‘I haven’t felt that good since Archie Gemmill scored against Holland in 1978!’ By incorporating such a scene into the film, the director delivers a powerful message to just how important, and unanimous, the two issues are in modern society.

It is therefore not surprising that Setanta Sports News have carried out such a ground breaking survey or, indeed, that they have come back with such results.
