FACEBOOK GROUP CALLS FOR GUILD NIGHT TO STAY ALIVE
It’s been the general opinion lately that the student union nights have gone downhill and Liverpool University’s Double Vision is no exception. Rumours of ending the night in January have been rife, and though contradicted by LGoS, its reputation and popularity have continued to fall. The Facebook group ‘Save Double Vision’ has clocked up over 700 members since late November, showing there is a huge cry from students for their unions to put on better nights.
The main complaint seems to be that there are not enough people out at Double Vision to make for a good atmosphere; it is estimated by the Venues office that 1500 people are needed to make for a success, and this year they have been averaging considerably fewer. There is no fathomable reason for this; the venue is convenient, the drinks cheap and the music good. The competition from clubs in town, though nothing new, its a hurdle for the Guild; Mood’s Aquapop’s move to a Monday and the availability of cheaper drinks elsewhere are obviously problems, but not enough to ruin a union.
Despite allegations of Double Vision’s failures, last Monday seemed to be a huge success: Alan Fletcher’s band Waiting Room played to a packed student union. Maybe all that is needed is more events like this one to make DV a success again? The people behind the Facebook group are met with the Guild to discuss how to make DV better, with ideas like theme nights to bring it back. It looks like we’re set for lots more exciting nights at DV, so get out there and support your union!
