REVIEW: CIRCUS AND CHIBUKU

Olivia Bunting and Nicci Cloke

It was a cold, dark Saturday night when hundreds of clubbers braved the elements and descended on the Liverpool Barfly. The reason? Circus. The city’s renowned ‘House Club of the Year’ was celebrating its 50th gig at Barfly’s Masque. The milestone was marked with a residents’ party which included a five hour set from DJ Yousef, one of the country’s top DJ’s and creator of Circus. Yousef founded the monthly event way back in 2002, co-promoting it with Richard McGinnis of the infamous Chibuku Shake Shake. The event was originally intended to happen at Cream but the club’s closure meant a search for a new venue had to begin. Barfly proved to be perfect. So perfect in fact, that the night has gone from strength to strength and 50 events later is one of Liverpool’s essential nights out.

While Yousef rocked the theatre for a full 300 minutes taking Liverpool’s clubbers through the cavernous corridors of his musical collection, Lewis Boardman, Will Jazz and Alex Wolfenden played to the bar in the notorious style expected from them.

Drinks were reasonably priced, and there was very little queuing at the bar, despite the sheer number of revellers. Full marks go to the staff who were friendly and welcoming, which really made a difference to the feel of the night.

As always, the party continued long after Barfly had closed its doors with the after party taking place at the Picket. But after five hours in skyscraper heels, and perhaps one fizzy drink too many, I decided to forgo it and headed home.

After celebrating the past, looking forward to the future Circus’ next gig is set to be a Boxing Day extravaganza with names such as Carl Craig and James Zabiela appearing alongside the residents.

A night at Chibuku is always the highlight of any month, and the 1st December was no different. Wandy, a resident DJ at the night since day one, played two amazing sets, and perhaps the only complaint to be made was the shortness of both Digitalism and The Whip’s sets. As always a night packed with atmosphere right from the balcony of the Loft to the bottom of the Theatre. Chibuku’s New Year’s Eve party is definitely a must go for anybody who fancies ringing in 2008 with a few filthy beats
