CULTURE CLUB

Let me throw a few definitions your way. ‘Culture’: intellectual and artistic achievement or expression; ‘culture’: customs of a particular time or people. Liverpool’s prestigious 2008 title possesses a capital ‘C’ with good reason.

I urge you, if only for a short time, to resist popular culture’s homogenised, standardised televisual drivel that breathes inertia into the body and a crackling white noise into the mind. Devour while you can the Culture the city you inhabit has to offer. It will aid you in the future, I promise. Imagine the scenario; it’s your first post-grad interview, you’re still sporting hat-hair from the freshly removed mortarboard and you are asked about your interests. Your reply, with a nervous grin, is that you have an acute knowledge of Big Brother series 3 to 7. Your application will be as successful as Michael Barrymore’s attempt to advertise swimming pools.

This maybe a city that at first sight is home to satsuma-shaded WAG’s and intimidating herds of Lacoste-clad men-folk, but beyond is a thriving multicultural epicentre. Surely as students it is our job to embrace all things intellectual and scholarly and uphold the city’s creative heritage. After all, we all want Liverpool to be remembered as the city that spawned the innovative qualities of The Beatles and not the intellectual prowess of Jennifer Ellison, init. So if you will, do something Cultural in 2008 and grasp the opportunity while it is here.
