On 18th November the UofL men’s lacrosse team travelled to Durham for the BUSA Northern Universities tournament, winning three of the day’s four games. Their only defeat came at the hands of St Andrews, a team almost entirely imported from the US, who duly despatched a 6-0 hiding. Despite this, Liverpool expected to advance to the knock-out stage but were undone by some twisted bureaucracy. Having beaten Manchester 4-1, Liverpool then found their place in the knock-outs was taken by the very same. How could such an injustice take place? The tournament was organised as a ten team league (top four qualify), each drawing four random fixtures in the league. The danger word here is ‘random’. Whilst Liverpool took a drubbing from St Andrews, Manchester didn’t draw them and consequently finished with three wins without having had their goal difference battered as Liverpool had.
