‘The whole world has gone insane’, I say to myself as I trot down Church Street, already late for work. It’s only eleven and town is already crowded. “Excuse me!” a woman with a pram races past me, dangerously close to clipping my heels. Whoosh! A group of schoolgirls laden with paper Primark bags bustle and push past me. Need to keep moving lest I be mowed down by throngs of zealous Christmas shoppers. I glance up at the oversized tree and though it has been there a week or two, I now look at it a little differently. Then I remember. Today is the 1st of December – only twenty-four days left. The decorations and irritating adverts came prematurely but now it feels like Christmas. It really crept up on us this year, didn’t it? The year has passed by so quickly and I’ve still got my bikini marks from summer…
For a lot of us, the festive season brings the anticipation of coursework deadlines and exams. Others will be preparing to travel home to reunite with family and friends. Or perhaps you will be staying in Liverpool. Whatever your plans, I hope your holidays aren’t too stressful and you can enjoy a lovely Christmas. Personally I’ll be here, decorating my tree, watching Muppets’ Christmas Carol and hoping Santa will bring me some new skinny jeans.
