The Student Union of a University in a sense epitomizes the transition for someone from being a silly teenager to a responsible adult. For the first time students are able to have a say in important issues, and take responsibility for making entertaining nights and other things. With its democratic policy of allowing students to vote for those who they feel will best represent them, the Student Union has an important role in the three years or more we spend studying. But with news filtering through that Liverpool Hope University wants to take more control over its elected Student Union, are our freedoms of the past being taken away in an effort to curb undesirable behaviour? I certainly think that is the case. Of course, it is easy to say you shouldn’t encourage binge drinking by organising wild and sometimes outrageous themed parties, but we are young and perhaps some of that silly adolescent attitude surfaces from time to time, especially where fun is to be had. But should more constraints be placed upon us? When push comes to shove we are in university to learn after all, but surely it’s wrong for a University to attempt to take over its student union thus curbing our leisure opportunities.
