UK’s biggest ever data security breach
Last week saw the unfolding of the UK’s biggest data security breach. Over 25m names, address, NI numbers and bank details went missing in two password-protected CD’s from HM Revenue & Customs.
The disappearance of the Child Benefit data, containing a full copy of details of every child under 16 in the UK and over 7.25m households was announced to Parliament by Alistair Darling, the Chancellor, only to be received by gasps of amazement of fellow MP’s. Mr Darling apologised for what he described as an “extremely serious failure on the part of HMRC to protect sensitive personal data entrusted to it”. HMRC chairman Paul Gray resigned after the latest incident came to light.
At the time of printing, no cases of ID theft had been reported.
