The 3rd football team often has a reputation for being as good as, or even better than their supposedly more talented superiors, and this year it seems is no different. Results so far this season have been mixed with one win, two losses and a draw in the men’s Northern Conference League. However, these poor results mask the undoubted potential of the side.
Indeed, players are unwavering in their support: “I think we have every chance of winning silverware this year,” says left back Sam McCarthy. And with the results shown in pre-season and in friendlies, it is difficult to disagree.
After an uncertain start with a comprehensive defeat to their rivals JMU, the team it seems were shaken into action. “We knew we had to do better,” adds McCarthy. They did not disappoint, going on to win three and draw one of their next four games.
Integral to this revival were Nick Davids the creative central midfield player and Chris Moffit who has been impressive up-front this season. Nine goals were scored by the team in the first four games.
Tellingly though, goals have dried up whilst results have faltered. Last week’s 3-1 one defeat at the hands of the University of Manchester may be enough to rekindle the kind of performances shown at the start of season. As we go to press, a win against city rivals Edge Hill may be enough to inject some life into a season that is in desperate need of a kick-start.
