User’s guide for the non-informed
As the third series of the Mighty Boosh explodes onto our screens, non-viewers will sadly once again let it pass them by. However, it’s not too late to get into; for those left out in the cold here’s the Skim-Reader’s Guide to the Mighty Boosh.
The series follows the adventures of serious, self-proclaimed ‘genre-spanner’ Howard Moon and his vain, merrily flippant companion Vince Noir- rock ’n’ roll star. Although they have multiple jobs throughout the series, the relationship follows the classic odd couple comedy pattern of two idiots who are categorically different but nonetheless remain partners, which in turn leads to childish bickering and hilarious put-downs such as ‘the council does your hair’ and ‘I’ll take you out for a meal with Mr and Mrs Pain…order up some violent quiche.’
The marmite of the whole series is the fact that the show is enveloped in a thick duvet of surrealism which people either love or loathe. Whether it be a living naan bread or a funky merman the Mighty Boosh never fails to feature something wildly out of the ordinary as Howard and Vince travel to far-off planets, bizarre dimensions and other realms that would give Dali a headache. However, the eccentricity is always tethered to reality by the two heroes’ petty arguments and each episode is book-ended by a relatively mundane setting meaning that the show only ever remains a joy to watch.
