As ‘Capital of Culture 2008’, an outsider might be forgiven for thinking that we were the most cultured student population going. And we are pretty good: great universities, beautiful galleries, museums, libraries. We are the perfect picture of academia.
But the fact is, those long 7 hours in uni every week are enough ‘intelligent time’ for me. After that, I’m quite happy to—in fact I want to—let my brain rot in front of such material as ‘Beauty and the Geek’ and ‘Asylum Idol’ (a real programme, where asylum seekers compete for a place in a boy band—you can’t make this stuff up). Yes, I read. But there really is nothing like the guilty pleasure of a little celebrity gossip; not for long, just the latest antics of Miss Spears et al—a little Briterature, if you will. The secret’s out: at times, I am undeniably, shamefully, uncultured. But I reckon you are too…you might all buy The Guardian or The Times, but there’s a little part of you dying to scream out, grab The Sun and run for the horizon and a simpler existence…So come on, grab a glass of red wine and an interested chin rub/gaze position, let’s spend days in museums and afternoons in coffee shops, making intellectual puns and terribly witty remarks. Let’s watch films with subtitles, drink wine, and eat cheese. Let’s be cultured!
No? Jeremy Kyle drinking game it is then. We’ll keep the wine and cheese though.
