Council’s main aim is to educate our way out of firearms culture
Since the tragic death of Rhys Jones in Croxteth earlier this year, the council has been focusing very much on the prevention of gun crime in the city. Indeed, it should be familiar to everybody in the city that, successful or not, there is a gun crackdown in progress.
On a national level, the Government has invested £1 million in gun crime prevention in September focusing on London, Liverpool, Birmingham and Manchester. This money is going towards undercover operations and surveillance of known gangs and gang areas, more police officers patrolling the streets, and mediation between gang members. So, if you thought there were more police around than usual, this would be why.
The Council’s biggest solution to all of this is education, education, education. One of the two main objectives on their website is, ‘Influencing the increasing firearms culture through education and community involvement’. So, they have assigned each secondary school its own police officer to talk about the danger of gun grime. There are also new measures in place to help the victims or witnesses of gun crime through the aptly named Victim and Witness Support. Gun crime in Liverpool is restricted to certain areas but hopefully with these steps in place, we’ll all notice Liverpool becoming a safer city over the next few months.
