CLEAR UP ON AISLE 16; EGO SPILLAGE

Unity Theatre plays host to poetry group

On Halloween night as most clad themselves in all manner of fangs, horns and capes, the Unity Theatre played host to poetry group Aisle 16 (Ross Sutherland, Joel Stickley, Chris Hicks and Luke Wright). Entitled maestros of pop-punk poetry, the Sunday Times has even hailed them as ‘highlights of the spoken word scene’. And in the performance, all four did indeed display the ability to twist and turn on the sound of a word, repeating and mutating rhymes throughout the set. Yet their work depends entirely on aural impact, on the impression on the ear and whilst they offer a humorous light on social events, I’m not sure how impressive this really is especially as it isn’t always very intelligently achieved. Unfortunately for me, the group does consider this to be impressive. After each poem a PowerPoint instructs the audience to ‘APPLAUD FOR MAXIMUM ENJOYMENT’. Perhaps not lads, but I suppose clapping does at least save fairies.
