Radio 1’s birthday brings some unusual combinations
Maximo Park hitting the high notes of Justin Timberlake? The Kooks unearthing a 90s Europop tune? No, this isn’t some weird musical parallel universe you’ve stumbled across. It’s actually Radio 1’s way of celebrating their 40th birthday, recruiting some of today’s top artists to cover songs from the past 5 decades. Yes, there are unexpected choices to say the least (Klaxons, Gossip) but it’s interesting hearing bands doing something out of the ordinary. Some more than match the originals (Keane, Natasha Bedingfield) whereas some miss the mark (the less said about The Streets’ Elton John cover the better). Overall, worth a listen.
